More on Gas Taxes vs. CAFE Standards
The Congressional Budget Office has a good policy brief on gasoline taxes as compared to increased fuel efficiency standards. The bottom line? Surprise, surprise, gasoline taxes make more economic sense. Raise the cost of doing the thing we don't want people to do. Want people to consume less gasoline? Make it more expensive, not cheaper, as increased efficiency would do.
